Quick answerAn AC tune-up in Spokane takes about an hour. The technician cleans the outdoor coil, tests the capacitor and contactor, checks refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling, measures the temperature drop across the indoor coil, flushes the condensate drain and replaces or checks the filter before the cooling season starts.

What a spring AC check finds
An air conditioner sits idle from September to May, and it comes back to work with whatever winter did to it: a coil packed with leaves, a capacitor that lost capacity, a contactor pitted by insects nesting in the cabinet, or a drain line full of debris. None of that stops the system on a mild day. All of it can stop it on a hot one.
A tune-up measures the things that predict failure rather than just confirming the system turns on. You get the readings in writing and a straight answer on any part that is close to the end.

The three core checks
Refrigerant charge check
We connect gauges and read suction and liquid pressures, then calculate superheat or subcooling depending on the metering device. Those numbers tell us whether the charge is right, not just whether some refrigerant is there. A system that is slightly low has a leak, and we say so rather than adding refrigerant quietly and leaving it to leak again. We also measure the temperature drop across the indoor coil, which shows whether the system is actually removing heat the way it should.

Coil cleaning
The outdoor coil sheds the heat pulled out of the house, and anything blocking the fins makes the compressor run hotter and longer. We shut the power, remove the top where needed, and rinse the coil from the inside out with a coil cleaner so dirt is pushed out rather than deeper. We straighten bent fins and clear debris from the base. The indoor coil is inspected through the access panel and cleaned when dust or growth has built up on it.
Pre-summer startup
Before the first hot stretch we test the capacitor with a meter against its rated value, inspect the contactor points, tighten electrical connections and measure the compressor and fan motor amperage. We flush the condensate drain and check the safety float switch so a clogged line shuts the system down instead of dripping through a ceiling. Last, we check the thermostat, confirm the outdoor unit is level and clear, and run a full cooling cycle while we watch pressures and amperage settle.

Why Spokane acs fail on the first hot week
From June through August Spokane's relative humidity drops to about 38 to 42 percent, so the AC here spends nearly all its effort on heat rather than moisture. That means long, steady run times on hot afternoons, which is exactly the load that exposes a weak capacitor or a dirty condenser. Checking both in spring, before those long run times start, is why the tune-up earns its cost.
What affects the cost of an AC tune-up
How long a tune-up takes
About an hour for a typical central AC, a little longer if the outdoor coil is heavily soiled or the air handler is in the attic. The system is off only while we work on it, and if we find a failing part we have with us, it can usually be replaced during the same visit once you approve it.
AC tune-up questions
When should I book an AC tune-up?
April or May, before the first hot stretch fills the schedule.
Is a tune-up needed every year?
Yes for most systems. Annual service keeps efficiency up and catches worn parts early.
Will you add refrigerant if it is low?
We find out why it is low first. Low refrigerant means a leak, and we quote the repair.
Does a tune-up help my warranty?
Many manufacturers require regular professional maintenance to keep coverage valid.
Can I clean the outdoor coil myself?
A gentle rinse with the power off is fine. Avoid pressure washers, which flatten the fins.
